The election results brought good news for Narendra Modi and his party. They won their first parliamentary seat in the southern state of Kerala.
Popular actor Suresh Gopi, who joined the BJP in 2016, won by a big margin of over 74,000 votes from the Thrissur seat. He’s been a famous actor in Kerala’s film industry for many years.
Before this, Gopi was a member of the upper house of the Indian parliament from the BJP. In the 2019 election, he was the BJP’s candidate for the same seat but came third.
Kerala has only 20 seats in India’s lower house of parliament, but the BJP has been trying hard to make progress here. Recently, Modi visited the state many times, holding big rallies and events.
Although the Congress has done well in Kerala, which has people of different religions, the BJP gave them and the Left alliance a tough competition in some areas.
Usually, Kerala’s voters switch between a Congress-led alliance and a coalition of Left parties. Gopi’s win gives hope to the BJP that they can become stronger in the state.
