How much water should you drink each day in hot weather?

Must read

In recent years hot weather has become more unpredictable because temperatures are rising worldwide. With summer coming it is very important to understand why staying hydrated (drinking enough water) is good for our health.

You might have heard that you should drink eight glasses of water a day. But this advice is not based on strong scientific evidence. The right amount of water to drink is different for everyone. It depends on things like age, gender, activity level and climate.

Here are some guidelines:

  • Children aged 4 to 8 should drink about 7 cups of water daily.
  • Older children and teenagers should drink 9 to 14 cups a day.
  • Women should drink about 11 cups (2.7 liters) of water each day.
  • Men should drink about 15 cups (3.7 liters) of water each day.

But remember these amounts are not just for plain water. You can get fluids from fruits, vegetables, soups and drinks like tea and coffee too.

If you exercise a lot or live in a hot place you might need to drink more water to replace what you lose through sweat. Pregnant women also need more water to help with blood flow, using calories and other body functions during pregnancy.

Signs that you might be dehydrated (not having enough water) include feeling thirsty, having dark-colored urine, feeling tired and having a dry mouth. If you notice these signs make sure to drink more fluids.

Some people think that drinking cold water is bad for you but this is not true. You should drink water at a temperature that feels good to you.

Everyone needs to stay hydrated but there is no exact amount of water that everyone should drink. Think about your own needs and drink enough to stay healthy, especially when it’s hot outside. For advice that fits your needs talk to a healthcare professional.
