New York City is very crowded. This makes it hard for Tesla’s ‘Full-Self Driving’ (FSD) software to work well.
Driving in Manhattan might look difficult, but it is not too bad. However if you use Tesla’s FSD software driving in the city becomes more difficult.
We have seen videos of FSD Teslas trying to drive in Manhattan before. A new video shows that the FSD software has improved but still has many problems. The FSD can handle much of the city but it is a bit slow and struggles with some things.
Two main problems for Tesla’s FSD are taxis and pedestrians.
In the video the Tesla car has trouble understanding what taxis are doing. A human driver can easily predict what a taxi will do next. You see taxis, people on the sidewalk and hazard lights. On a crowded road you know when to change lanes and go around. But the Tesla FSD is not advanced enough to understand these clues correctly.
Crosswalks are another problem for Tesla cars. In New York people stand near the edge of the sidewalk when waiting to cross the street. The car thinks these people are already crossing the road and backs up to give them space. This disrupts the flow for both drivers and pedestrians.
Tesla’s FSD software still needs to learn a lot to handle the challenges of driving in busy cities like New York.
