Scientists have found a big reason why some people get a sickness called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which also affects other body parts like the spine, liver and arteries.
This discovery brings hope to millions of people everywhere according to The Guardian.
The exciting thing is that this new finding can help make medicines better for those with IBD and other similar illnesses.
Dr. James Lee who works at the Francis Crick Institute in London, said ‘We found a really important thing that goes wrong when people get inflammatory bowel disease. This is a big deal because it helps us understand the sickness better and shows us ways we can treat it.’
In the UK over half a million people have inflammatory bowel disease. It comes in two main types: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and it affects at least 7 million people around the world.
People with this sickness can have lots of problems like stomach pain, weight loss, diarrhoea and seeing blood in their poop. Sometimes they even need surgery to take out part of their stomach even though there are medicines like steroids that can help with the symptoms.
