Spain has decided to permanently recall its ambassador from Argentina due to a growing conflict with Argentina’s right-wing president, Javier Milei.
Milei, known for his combative style and alignment with populist leaders like Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, caused controversy last weekend. He suggested that Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, was involved in corruption.
These comments angered Spain’s centre-left government, which called Milei’s remarks a “direct attack” on its democracy and demanded a public apology. However, Milei refused to apologize, claiming he was actually the victim in this situation.
In response, Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, announced on Tuesday that Spain’s ambassador to Argentina, María Jesús Alonso Jiménez, who had been recalled the day before, would not be returning to her position.
